How far is garbage sorting to go?
In March 2017, the national development and reform commission and the ministry of housing and urban-rural development issued the implementation plan for the domestic garbage classification system, requiring 46 cities to implement mandatory domestic garbage classification first.
In June 2019, the ministry of housing and urban-rural development, the national development and reform commission, the ministry of ecology and environment and nine other departments jointly issued the notice of the ministry of housing and urban-rural development and other departments on comprehensively carrying out the work of household garbage classification in cities at and above the prefectural level. Starting from 2019, cities at and above the prefectural level will start to classify household waste, according to the notice.
By the end of 2020, 46 pilot cities will have basically completed their garbage classification and treatment systems. Other prefecture-level cities have achieved full coverage of domestic waste classification by public institutions.
By 2022, at least one district in each city will have the full coverage of household garbage classification.
By 2025, cities at or above the prefectural level will basically have a garbage classification and treatment system, and will formulate the corresponding color of garbage bags.
By the end of 2019, three cities -- Shanghai, hangzhou and xiamen -- have implemented garbage classification and issued a series of laws and regulations.
